Tips for Food photography and Food Styling

  • First of all, keep in mind it’s always better to show the ingredients which have been used in the final dish.
  • Backdrop: the backdrop is the essence of food styling and food photography. The backdrop should be in contrast with the item you are capturing.
  • Symmetry/Asymmetry: The items or food which are placed should be either symmetrical or can be in a fussy way. It depends on the food items you are choosing.
  • Light: I have taken this picture during the evening with the overhead light as the main light source because I want my picture to be bright and crisp. The mood of pic also depends upon the light you are using, like natural light, overhead lights, or lamps. Light highly affects the tone of the pic.
  • Since I have chosen chocolate bark so, it’s not necessary that each bark should be of the same size and shape. Here the chocolates are in rugged shapes. They are also not placed in symmetrical order but rather are scattered all over to give a rustic look.
  • Now let’s come to the photography part: in this pic, I have chosen to take the pic from above. It covers almost the whole frame. In this pic, there is no need to keep the backdrop at the side as it is shot from over head.
  • Some pic looks better from above, some from sides, and some from 45 degrees. You have to look at the dish, try to click pic from all angles and then decide which is better.

In today’s world, food styling and food photography are not just confined to a mere hobby, but it has emerged as an interesting career option. So keep learning and trying something new every day.
