Shahi Tukda

About

Shahi Tukda is said to be introduced first in the Mughal era and was one of the desserts to be prepared in the royal kitchen for the kings & queens. It is composed of two words “Shahi” means royal, and “Tukda” means pieces. It is also famous for different names like “Double ka meetha,” royal Indian bread pudding, Shahi Toast, etc.

This authentic dessert is called double ka meetha in many places because it doubly loaded with sweetness. First, bread is dipped in sugar syrup, and next, the soaked pieces of bread are layered with sweet and chill malai rabdi(another Indian dessert) and topped with chopped nuts.

But I tried to prepare this dessert within 15 minutes.
Want to know how? Let’s spill the beans then😉

Well, I have used ready whipped cream in half Shahi tukda, and the rest I have garnished with desiccated coconut and chopped pistachio. And voila, my dessert is ready in minutes. 😇😇😇

Some Interesting Facts about Shahi Tukda

From history and beliefs, It’s been said that the famous Shahi Tukda has evolved from a popular ancient Egyptian dessert pudding known as “Um Ali”.

As per the historians, It’s narrated that Sultan went hunting with his troop of hunters along the River Nile. Thereafter a long exhausting day, they stopped in a village to get some rest and satiate their hunger. In the same village, a famous cook, “Um Ali,” was called by the local villagers to cook something special for the royal king and their men. But as it was too late, he didn’t find some fresh bread and ended up making something with pieces of stale bread, nuts, milk, sugar, etc., and finally baked them together in the oven. The dish turned out so yummy and delicious that they named it after the cook’s name. And thus, the famous Um Ali came into existence.

As per another story, the famous Shahi Tukra is also a newer version of the middle eastern bread pudding called Eish es Serny, also called Palace bread. This dessert is made with a dried piece of bread, which is sliced and then boiled in sugar & honey syrup. Later they are garnished with golden caramel, nuts, and arq- e -Gulab. This bread preparation moved down the time lane and evolved as present time Shahi tukda.
